Probiotics and Oral Health [Guest Post - Dr. Shekhar Challa]

Probiotics and Oral Health

The reason we are told to brush twice a day, floss, use mouthwash and get regular dental checkups is because our gums and teeth are at risk for serious decay and damage due to bad bacteria. Oral diseases are on the rise, and the latest statistics show that 80 percent of Americans over 30 have gingivitis, tooth decay, cavities or periodontitis (destruction or loss of bone structure and teeth).
Streptococcus salivarius is the main “good-guy” bacteria in the mouth, and its job is to keep Streptococcus mutans (bad-guy) bacteria in check so that it does not colonize the surface of the teeth and break down enamel.
Beat Bad Bacteria
The good bacteria found in probiotics enter the body and work to overcrowd bad bacteria. There are places in your mouth and gut called adherence sites where bacteria are able to attach and begin to grow. If good bacteria reach those adherence sites first, there is less room for bad bacteria.
Probiotics for Oral Health
There are several companies producing a variety of probiotic products for oral health. I’m talking about more than just toothpaste and mouthwash (even though those are included). Not to mention, the line of probiotics available is expanding beyond human consumption…
Probiotic Gum – An example is TheraBreath Aktiv-K12 (www.therabreath.com), which not only provides fresh breath but actually obliterates those bad-odor bacteria.
Probiotic Mints –Try Profresh Mints (www.profreshmints.com) for fresh breath, white teeth and healthy gums and teeth. The mint includes a patented blend of three primary good bacteria: Streptococcus oralis KJ3, Streptococcus uberis KJ2 and Streptococcus rattus JH145. These good bacteria cause the bad guys to clump and stick to teeth, which makes them easy to brush, floss and rinse away. Also check out their line of kids’ chewable probiotics and probiotic powder for your pets’ oral health.
Probiotic Lozenges – A study in the Journal of Oral Microbiology found probiotic lozenges may reduce bad bacteria in the mouth if you have chronic periodontitis (most common gum disease). To decrease bleeding gums and build protection against plaque, check out GUM PerioBalance (www.periobalance.com).
Probiotic Toothpaste – While probiotic toothpaste is rather new in the U.S., it has been around for years in other countries. Two brands to look for are OMX Toothpaste and Designs for Health’s PerioBiotic Toothpaste.
Probiotic Mouthwash – In Sweden, a study determined using probiotic mouthwash actually reduced the amount of bad bacteria in your upper respiratory tract, ultimately reducing your chance of respiratory-related pneumonia. Check out Compete50 Probiotic Mouthwash or KForce Balance Rinse for starters.
Our mindsets are morphing from “all bacteria is bad” to understanding the differences between good and bad bacteria and how probiotics can actually work to protect us from illness and disease. Although the main focus of probiotic products is concentrated on the digestive tract and gastrointestinal health, other studies and products are surfacing, such as the oral health aids I just mentioned.
Probiotics are rapidly becoming more available and more prominent in the U.S. as our knowledge of their potential benefits increases. On a global scale, it is predicted that by 2014, the global probiotics market will be worth $32.6 billion.

**Please Note: Always consult your physician before adding a supplement — including probiotics — to your diet.

Be sure to check out the oral products you just read about, as the probiotics can only serve to beneficially supplement your health. To ease your way into using probiotics, I suggest starting with a probiotic mint such as Profresh Mints. Get the benefits of probiotics in a single daily mint (http://www.profreshmints.com/). Update

I think that I have been using my natural remedy for long enough now for me to say that I think they completely work.  I know that I can't expect it to just make everything okay so of course I have gotten a little upset from time to time like right now but that is natural.  In all fairness I have never felt this OKAY for so long before and I am really enjoying it.  Yesterday I think is just a little bit rough only cause it is the first day of childcare being full in about a week and I clearly was enjoying the peace and quiet.  Not to mention one of my daycare children was rather terrible this morning and that started me off on the wrong foot for the rest of the day.  But in light of his tantrums this morning I have started to enforce our "NO TV" rule unless it is in direct correlation to a lesson we are doing like our sign language or morning yoga.  Usually I will let this one little man start his day with ONE episode of Mighty Machines.  Yesterday morning though my Netflix wasn't working and he threw a fit, screaming and yelling, hitting his mom the whole nine yards and I am sure she doesn't want to start her day like that either the poor woman.  So instead of continuing his expectation and enabling this behavior by providing him with his show when he throws a fit I am taking it away completely.  I am enforcing the idea that daycare is DIFFERENT than home and we don't watch what we want when we want, we have are here for a different purpose.  We play with our friends, learn and get dirty like little boys should, not teaching them that freaking out in such an inappropriate way is okay.  Next thing you know he will be in an office throwing his bosses desk furniture around when they disagree.

Despite all of this I have a reasonable mood and honestly today would be my first bad day.  But we made it out of the house to play in the dirt and we have been fully productive.  That on one of my bad days is NOT a possibility so I know that these tissue salts are definitely effecting my life for the better!  One of the BEST bad days I have EVER had!  I can't wait to see what my future holds now that I will be taking these on a long term basis.  What kinds of things I will accomplish and what kind of goals I will be making and meeting.

I want to start looking into going to a gym to do weight training in some way.  I think that weight training is going to be one of the few ways I will loose my weight and stick to it.  In fact, back in high school, my teacher informed my parent that I NEEDED to go into weight lifting.  That I had a real future in it and should think of perusing it.  Of course as a young and reasonably feminine I wasn't into it.  Now comes my task of looking for a great WOMEN'S gym that is CHEAP.  I have noooo money to be throwing around at gym costs so I need either a drop in rate or a VERY low monthly one.  I would prefer the drop in mainly cause I have no idea if I am going to stick to this, which is why I am leaning more towards the monthly rate.  The gym in itself is going to be a task with my body image issues which is why I am going to be going to a women's gym.

Do you hit the gym??  What are your experiences??  Are you like me and hesitant about going cause you don't want to be seen sweating or horrible about yourself when surrounded by fit trim young people.

Changes, Changes.....

Lately I haven't been doing anything, my stress levels have been really high, funds low and my depression and anxiety has been plaguing me in a rough way.  So with Spring renewal in the air and everything looking up and making way for new and amazing times in my life and my families I have taken it upon myself to find a way to manage these things.  And to manage these things without some harmful medication cocktail and I have to pay a large amount of money for.  I wanted to find a way to try something that could help me without any bad effects you know?  If I find a way to deal with it using vitamins, minerals and some lifestyle changes then if it doesn't work it isn't because of some horrible side effect it just adds goodness to my life and may or may not help my depression etc... Win, win correct??  I thought so.  So this Little Fat Girl That Could needs to start all over again and I need to focus from the head down, cause a healthy head and set of emotions leads to healthier more lasting long term choices.

What are the small changes I have made this week for myself??  I have bought these two items:

So using these wonderful things, as well as my usual Soya Lecithin that I take and have taken since I was pregnant, has really made a difference in my mood and overall productivity of the day.  I have been really enjoying it and I have slept really well the last few nights and that to me has been just amazing.  On top of this I have made another slightly strange dietary addition and those are Goat Milk and Goat Cheese.  I have been a lover of Goat Cheese for a very long time, I mean come on it is delicious and the amount of calcium in one cup of milk is 33% and I need to make those dietary changes that encourage LOTS of calcium.  With both my immediate parents developing advanced osteoporosis it is REALLY important for me to include these things.  I love it thankfully and as far as I know I have not lactose issues like my sister does.  Though that could change over time and then I will have to look towards supplements.

Recently my hubby developed a very severe colon infection never seen in someone his age before so the talk of changes in all our overall diet and care has been something VERY important at the moment.  Are you making any large changes to your lifestyle this Spring??
